It’s official, Ryan Reynolds is going to be the Green Lantern. Now, I don’t have any problems with Ryan Reynolds, I love the man — I think he does a great job of being a great average guy who just happens to be better looking, in better shape, and funnier than the average guy, but I don’t know if he’s got the acting chops to play Hal Jordan/Green Lantern. Granted, I have not seen Blade Trinity (and to be honest, I don’t think I will) and I have yet to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine so I could be wrong in my assumption that he may not be the strongest actor for the role, but there is something about him that gives the feeling he’ll bring some goofiness to the Green Lantern. Of course, once the trailers start coming out and then the movie hits the big screen I will be there opening weekend and most likely retracting what I said about Reynolds not having the integrity to helm a feature like GL.

So, who would I cast in my version of the Green Lantern movie? Well, I’m glad you asked. Some have noted that my choice for Mr. Jordan is too old, but I think they can very easily work around that with a script that explains Hal Jordan’s military background and then move to working in the private sector as a test-pilot for private company aiming to acquire a large government contract — we’re talking post 9/11 so this would be an easy addage to the GL mythos. And given his work on “Quantum Leap” Scott Bakula would make for an amazing Halr Jordan/Green Lantern. The whole run of his show was based on the idea of having the will to help save others and if that doesn’t translate into a big-screen adaptation of the Emerald Crusader then I don’t know what does. As for Sinestro, I was watching “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” recently and realized that with old-school make-up and special effects Christopher Lloyd would make a perfect power-hungry opposite to Scott Bakula’s righteous crusader. The story would start with Hal getting his ring just like he did in the comics and being introduced to Sinestro before he goes crazy. Over the course of the story Jordan, and other GLs, would come across various cosmic threats who are keen on the idea of spreading fear throughout the known universe. And since GL is bascially a cop story set in space, the rest of the plot would be around a possible conspiracy within the GL Corps where someone is freeing and arming these galactic criminals in an attempt to commit a coup d’etat. In the midst of an investigation that escalates to a full-on battle, Hal uncovers ancient texts describing the source of fear in the universe and the subsequent weakness to yellow that GL rings suffers from — then Hal pieces together that Sinestro is at the center of all this. Once Sinestro begins to force his will on other worlds, Hal and other GLs show up and arrest him.

The idea would be that at the end of the movie it is clearly set-up for another film that would focus around the makings of the Sinerstro Corps and a pending war with the Green Lanterns; and, at the end of that story you would see Hal Jordan being surrounded by various Sinestro Corps members as they open fire on him — cut to Kyle Rayner asleep in his bed as his whole room ignites in an emerald glow with a power ring hovering in front of him as he is asked to become a member of the Green Lantern Corps.

But that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Last night I was on Facebook and NPR posted a story about how Supergirl is getting a new pair of superpanties. That’s right, Supergirl’s wardrobe is getting changed after all these years.

If you’re an avid reader of comics you know there has been an attempt over the years to make comics more realistic in their approach — one of my favorite example comes from The Fantastic Four, Reed and family are no longer allowed to live in the Baxter Building due to insurance liability from the various attacks they’ve been under over the decades. So, it only seems necessary that Supergirl, who wears a skirt while she flies, would put on some red spankies to cover her Kryptonian cheeks.

This should be an interesting story to watch progress in the world of comic fandom; some may take offense to the idea of changing a popular character’s appearance while others may feel that the decision is a more progressive stance and creates a comic book environment where female characters aren’t solely eye-candy. I feel that this is a step in the right direction of not only creating a realistic comic book world, but also in showing that comic books aren’t just for boys.

But then again, there is the argument of how often do we see Supergirl’s panties — the last time I read a Supergirl story was back when Doomsday beat the crap out of Superman (the first time) and Supergirl would actually shapeshift from her normal appearance to her Supergirl appearance (does she still do that?) and Supergirl’s panties weren’t an issue then — one could reasonably argue that Superman and Batman should show underwear lines in order to convey the message that they are not completely nude underneath their costumes. And for that matter, would it hurt them to show a superhero stopping to go the bathroom or eat (when it’s not being used as a major plot device)? There are some issues in the world of comics, any world of fiction really, that don’t need to be adressed and maybe Supergirl’s underwear is one of them.

Many moons ago, my friends and I threw a superhero themed birthday party for a close friend of ours, and while the four of us close friends wore shirts representing our JLA alter-egos we also made up some tasty (and highly) alcoholic beverages, and here are the recipes:

The Superman:

1 1/2 ounces vodka — to represent Superman’s superstrength

1/2 can of Red Bull — to represent Superman’s superspeed

1/2 ounce grenadine — to represent Krypton’s sun

1 small can of pineapple juice or pineapple chunks — to represent Earth’s yellow sun

Caution: drinking too many of these may not only get you drink, but will also give you a massive sugar-high that will result in you crashing early for the night. So, take a hint from Uncle Ben, “With a great drink, comes great repsonsibility!”

The Batman:

This is a nod to the black and blue Bob Kane look of Batman from his early days.

1 ounce blue curacao

1 ounce BlaVod (Black Vodka — it does exist)

Pour the blue curacao into a chilled double shot-glass and then layer the BlaVod on top.

The Flash:

1 1/2 ounce vodka

1/2 can of Red Bull

1/2 small can of pineapple juice

1/2 ounce grenadine

As for the The Green Lantern, the guy who wore that shirt wasn’t that much of a drinker, so he stuck with green tea. Anyone have any suggestions for a strong drink that represents will power?
